Nevada report on initial unemployment claims for May shows slowing recovery

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) -- Initial claims for jobless benefits in Nevada fell 0.8 percent in May compared with the same month a year ago.

A report Thursday by the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says 16,183 initial claims for unemployment were filed in May.

May marks the sixth consecutive month and 39th time in the past 42 months that initial claims have been lower than the year before.

However, state economist Bill Anderson says this was the smallest decline of the past six months.

Initial jobless claims in Nevada peaked in December 2008 at more than 36,000, and the average rate before the recession was less than 13,000 per month.

Anderson says the rate of improvement has slowed since January, and that spring and summer months usually have the year's lowest claims rates.
