Turns out Netflix wastes no time in determining whether a show has a future or not.

The streaming giant's content boss has revealed that the company waits only a month or so before deciding to cancel a series.

Cindy Holland revealed at NTV in Jerusalem (via Broadcast) that Netflix "absolutely" checks the overnight performances of shows, but waits 28 days to see if they have reached their targets.

"If you order a lot of shows, then there are going to be a few that get cancelled," Holland explained.

"We have projection models that help us to assess the size of the audience that we think will show up, and if they don't, we have to consider the point of continuing to invest in something that isn't performing.

"We are trying to stretch our investment dollars as far as we can to maximise the money our members give us each month."

Of course, we all know that the company is very secretive about its viewer data, though the BBC's Director-General recently suggested what the viewer numbers were for one of Netflix's flagship shows.

Lord Hall claimed that the BBC's big 2018 hit Bodyguard took in 10 million more viewers in the UK than The Crown, the former drawing 17 million.

"Our data suggests The Crown [reached] 7 million users in the UK in 17 months," he claimed, using it as an argument for why the BBC can stand on its own in the streaming age.

However, he added: "We can make linear and nonlinear TV channels and video-on-demand work together."
