Netflix has renewed the science fiction series 3 Body Problem.

At the streamer's Upfront presentation on Wednesday (May 15), it was announced the adaptation of Cixin Liu's novel will be back for "all-new episodes" — though an exact episode count hasn't been announced.

In its statement, Netflix also declined to call these episodes "season two" and noted that "the number of seasons and episodes… will be revealed at a later date".

Netflix vice president Peter Friedlander said: "The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End.

"Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can't wait to see what they have in store."

A comment from showrunners David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo indicated that they were now working towards bringing 3 Body Problem to an end.

"We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us," the showrunners said. "Here we go!"

Former Game of Thrones bosses Benioff and Weiss debuted their series with Woo in March, earning positive reviews for its faithful adaptation of Cixin Liu's vast and complex mythology.

Benioff recently told Digital Spy that there was "definitely a lot of pressure" adapting 3 Body Problem given the mixed response to their final season of Game of Thrones.

"It's a different kind of pressure now," the producer told us. "I think it's more of a middle-aged pressure, but it's certainly there. And as far as the reaction to the last season, I mean, I think that's undeniable that there is some residual tension coming from that. But there's also not a whole lot you can do with that. You're just trying to make the best possible show you can, and that was our goal with 3 Body Problem."
