Billie Piper has become the latest celebrity to showcase the ‘no trousers’ trend which is currently sweeping the fashion world.

At the London premiere of her new film Snoop on Wednesday evening, Piper, 41, wore a pinstripe blazer, polka dot crop top and high-waisted pinstripe knickers, leaving her bottom half bare except for a pair of sheer tights.

At first glance you may think she has forgotten to add her trousers or skirt, but Piper, who plays Newsnight producer Sam McAlister in the film about the interview in which Emily Maitlis questioned Prince Andrew about his links to Jeffrey Epstein, was in fact nodding to one of the most prevalent trends of 2024.

It’s a look which has been seen on the catwalk at Miu Miu, Chanel and Christian Dior. So far, it has been worn by Gen Z and young millennial stars like Emma Corrin, Kendall Jenner and Kristen Stewart who have all gone viral with their leg-flashing looks. The no trousers trend has become the most assured way to go viral in an era when it’s difficult to deliver fashion shock factor.

Piper’s version, which is by Dolce and Gabbana, proves that it’s a trend which isn’t off limits to midlifers - her tailored jacket and sheer Wolford hosiery offer some grown-up polish to the ensemble, which will have been planned by her stylist, Rebecca Corbin Murray, who also works with Florence Pugh and Salma Hayek. Piper has become known for her daring red carpet choices which have recently included an off-shoulder LBD and a cropped top and mini skirt at the Brits.

The film, due for release on April 5, is a behind-the-scenes look at how the interview with the Duke, which abruptly ended his royal career, was secured and the way it unfolded. It is based on the memoir Scoops by Sam McAlister, the “booker extraordinaire” who negotiated the controversial interview with the Duke in which he discussed his friendship with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Piper was joined by several of her stylish Scoop co-stars on the red carpet. Gillian Anderson, who plays Maitlis, opted for a classically elegant off-shoulder button green bouclé dress by London designer Emilia Wickstead, while Romola Garai, who portrays Newsnight editor Esme Wren, wore a cream tailored suit enlivened with pale blue ribbons tied around the arms.

Like Piper, Keeley Hawes - who portrays Prince Andrew’s PR guru Amanda Thirsk - went for an all-black outfit but her choice couldn’t have been more covered-up, comprised of a long chiffon dress with a nipped-waist jacket layered over the top. An understated antidote to Piper’s bold knickers-out statement.

Prince Andrew, 64, came under intense scrutiny following the interview over the allegations that Virginia Giuffre was trafficked to have sex with him when she was 17.

Following the BBC broadcast and the furore over his Epstein links, Prince Andrew stepped down from public life as a working royal, although he continues to deny any wrongdoing.

The new film has been framed as a tribute to the work of the four women responsible for it.
