Neighbours has hinted that David Tanaka's loved ones may have to start saying their goodbyes, as his condition continues to deteriorate.

The popular character is currently seriously ill at Erinsborough Hospital, awaiting an urgent kidney transplant.

Viewers know that David's half-brother Robert Robinson agreed to be a donor, but the jailed killer has shamelessly used the opportunity to escape from custody and go on the run.

Neighbours' emotional Christmas Day episode saw David continue to get weaker at the hospital, after his husband Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) broke the news that the planned transplant hadn't gone ahead.

Aaron stayed by David's bedside, while David's father Paul desperately looked for ways to secure a kidney on the black market. Meanwhile, the rest of the Robinsons tried their best to enjoy the Christmas concert at Lassiters.

When Paul returned to the hospital to check on David, one glance from Aaron confirmed that things weren't looking good.

Shortly afterwards, Terese, Harlow and Roxy received a call at the concert, warning them that they needed to get back to the hospital ASAP. Is time running out for David and is it time to start preparing themselves for the worst?

Meanwhile, Robert's runaway attempt led him back to Ramsay Street, where pregnant Elly Conway spotted him.

Robert chased Elly inside to the Kennedy house, where her waters broke and he held her at knifepoint – refusing to let her have the medical help she needed.

When Finn Kelly (Rob Mills) returned home, he ended up delivering Elly's baby girl, bringing the former couple closer for the heartwarming moment.

Once the little one had been delivered, Robert made a quiet exit from the Kennedy house, choosing not to do any harm. But where is he heading off to next?

Neighbours continues on Boxing Day at 12.25pm and 4.40pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
