Neighbors worry about Friday’s homicide in Lansing

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Lansing Police Department arrested one person of interest following a deadly shooting Friday morning in Lansing.

Neighbors of the 3100 block of Turner St. in the city said they’re not surprised by the nearby homicide and added that they’re used to hearing and seeing vehicles in the area nearly once or twice a week.

“Those are the kind of things that we kind of expect,” Sandra O’Donnell said, who has lived in the area for more than 20 years.

She added that this most recent incident is just the latest in a string of disturbances from the Hildebrandt Park complex.

“It’s a constant situation over there,” she said. “Police are there a couple times a week, sometimes more.”

Around 12:12 a.m. LPD responded to the scene where they found a 22-year-old man with a gunshot wound. First responders took him to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.

O’Donnell said this is why she and her family have always taken precautions.

“When our children were small, we didn’t let them go around the block by themselves. They always either had another child with them or a dog or something because you just don’t know what’s going to happen,” she said. “Overall, this is a great neighborhood. You know, every neighborhood has bad apples I guess. But, we’ve lived here a very long time and a lot of our neighbors have too. And so, we like it here and we just try to keep our space here.”

LPD has not released the name of the victim as of Friday evening but said they believe the homicide to be an isolated incident.

6 News reached out to the complex for comment but has not heard back.

Anyone with information about this homicide is encouraged to contact LPD at 517-483-4600 extension 5, call Crime Stoppers at 517-483-7867, or send a private Facebook message to the Lansing Police Department.
