Neighbors help stop alleged St. Louis County peeper

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – In a Chesterfield neighborhood just southwest of Olive Boulevard and U.S. Highway 141, concerned residents claim to have helped stop an alleged peeper.

Several residents described fellow homeowner Suraj Shah walking his dog at odd hours while carrying a flashlight in the neighborhood surrounding the Four Seasons Country Club. The residents, who did not want to be identified, said a group of moms and dads communicated by text and sometimes followed Shah on golf carts when they became concerned about how close he was getting to homes.

Police listened to the complaints and also followed him. The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has now filed four counts of felony attempted invasion of privacy against 39-year-old Shah.

Court records say the defendant confessed to police that he had filmed nude females over the past several months. A probable cause statement adds, “The defendant further stated that he had a problem and could not help himself.”

According to police, Shah was arrested in 2019 in Town and Country for the same act.

Chesterfield police say Shah’s phone has videos of women from years ago. Sgt. Robert Powell told FOX 2 earlier this month, “We have investigators who are combing through a lot of videos that he has on his phones, and they are just trying to piece everything together—locations as well as victims.”

Neighbors are also trying to determine if their kids were videotaped and fear what could happen with those images.

Potential victims should know they may be able to get support from internet child crime advocates, like Lauren Peffley of Crisis Aid International.

“We can, as advocates, walk with them through that process. So, we can be with them when they’re reporting to a detective,” Peffley said.

Crisis Aid International has offices at many area police departments.

“I have some crimes that I have been working with for three and a half years now, so we’ll stick with them as long as they want our support,” Peffley added.

Defendant Shah was still in custody as of Tuesday afternoon. A judge denied lowering his release conditions on May 9 from the current $150,000 cash-only bond.
