Neighbor’s actions may have saved dog from being stabbed to death
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man whose wife was watching a neighbor’s pet is accused of trying to kill the dog by stabbing it.
According to the arrest report, Francisco Leyva was taken into custody in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 11 after a resident in a nearby unit called the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department because she heard “yelling and loud banging noises” and then looked into the unit’s window and saw a man with a knife.
When officers arrived at the apartment, they also peered into the window and saw a small white dog in a crate and a man “mopping blood off the floor,” the report said.
“The white dog was panting and shaking inside of the crate and had blood all over its mouth along with its body and bed pillow inside of the crate.”
Inside the apartment, police found a bloodied kitchen knife and pools of blood, documents said.
When officers questioned Leyva, he was elusive and smelled of alcohol. He said he had returned home from work and found the apartment and dog in that condition, the report stated.
Police learned Leyva’s wife was watching the dog for a neighbor who went out of town. Animal control took the injured dog for treatment. When police contacted the dog’s owner she said she wanted to press charges.
Leyva is facing a felony charge of attempting to kill/maim/disfigure/poison another person’s animal. He was released from the Clark County Detention Center on house arrest and was ordered to have no contact with animals and to abstain from drugs and alcohol. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on June 12.
