Neenah parents protest closure of Hoover Elementary School

NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – Hoover Elementary School parents continue the fight to reverse a school board decision that closed their elementary school.

Several parents held a protest in Neenah on Wednesday afternoon hoping they could convince the School Board to reconsider.

At the end of February, the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education voted 5-4 to shutter Hoover Elementary citing the need to redistribute students in the district as population growth impacts parts of the city differently.

It was a very close vote in front of a large crowd of people who mostly supported keeping Hoover Elementary open. Some of those parents took to the streets to protest on Wednesday afternoon.

“We feel that they should revote when they get new board members because their opinion should matter versus two of the board members that are no longer going to be on the board and a new superintendent starting soon. They should have a say in things, too,” said Liz Rosenow of Neenah.

The Neenah School District released a statement saying the transition will open more opportunities for students and create better efficiencies within the Neenah Elementary School structure.

The District also believes that closing Hoover Elementary will save between $470,000 and $650,000.
