Neenah and Appleton welcome the Wisconsin USBC to the Fox Valley

NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – Bowling alleys are often noisy places, but you could have heard a pin drop when they played the National Anthem at Rolling Thunder Lanes to start the largest state bowling tournament in the country.

A love of country and pride in sport was on full display this weekend for the opening of the 122nd Open Championship Tournament with the Wisconsin USBC.

It runs 16 weeks, with more than 10,000 bowlers coming from all over to the Neenah- Appleton area bringing all that extra green with them and hoping for some luck on the lanes.

“It’s a big boost for the area,” said Jason Peirick of the Wisconsin USBC. “Hotels. Restaurants. All that good stuff!”

Jennie Klingen was part of a group from Rhinelander and Eagle River.

“It’s something fun to do with friends,” Klingen told Local 5 News. “We travel wherever we need to go!”

The first Wisconsin State Bowling Championship was held in 1902.

Last year’s tournament in Madison had 1910 teams and featured a prize list of $457,055.00.

This tournament is open to anybody who lives in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula and a member of the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).
