Needs of senior citizens are focus of task force formed in Marion, Marion County

A Senior Task Force has been created to help identify the needs of the growing senior and elderly population in Marion and Marion County.

The group also will determine what actions need to be taken to meet the needs, according to Mayor Bill Collins.

"Marion City and county are experiencing what is called the Silver Tsunami," Collins said in a news release. "We want to get ahead of the many growing needs of our senior population before it becomes overwhelming."

The task force is in cooperation with the Marion County commissioners and is being led by Cassie Gregory, executive director of the Marion County Council on Aging.

Other task force members represent the Marion Senior Center, Marion Public Health, Community Action, home health companies, skilled nursing facilities and assisted living facilities.

A Senior Summit is planned for Aug. 27 at the Marion Senior Center. Local organizations that serve the senior and elderly population will be invited.
