Neb. state parks promote exercise with Jan. 1 hike

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraskans are being encouraged to start 2013 off with some exercise at a state park.

Ponca State Park in northeast Nebraska is sponsoring a "First Day Hike" on Jan. 1 to encourage Nebraskans to get active and enjoy the outdoors.

The park will offer unguided hikes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday. After the hike, participants can enjoy hot cider and cookies at the park's education center.

The hike at Ponca State Park is one of 646 similar events scheduled at state parks around the country.

A valid state park permit is required to enter Ponca State Park.
