Nebraska senators propose tax exemptions for military retirement pay, Social Security benefits

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska lawmakers are proposing tax exemptions for Social Security income and military retirement benefits.

Four measures were introduced in the Legislature on Thursday during the first day of bill introductions.

Omaha Sen. Bob Krist proposed a bill that would exclude military retirement pay and Social Security benefits from state income taxes.

Omaha Sen. Jeremy Nordquist introduced a bill that would eliminate state income taxes on Social Security benefits for lower- and middle-income Nebraska residents. Nordquist says his proposal is targeted at married households with an income of $80,000 or less and individuals who make $60,000 or less. The exemption would be set to keep pace with inflation.

Fremont Sen. Charlie Janssen introduced two tax exemption measures, one aimed at Social Security benefits and one aimed at military pensions.
