Nearly a dozen rescued from rip currents on Florida beaches over Easter weekend

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — More than a dozen people were rescued from rip currents in Volusia County over Easter weekend, NBC affiliate WESH reported Monday.

Volusia County Beach Safety said 19 people were involved in water related incidents, 10 of which were caught in rip currents.

“That makes for 144 total rescues for the whole month,” Cpt. Stephen Canfield told WESH. “When they look at the beach and it looks a little bit more calm, but underneath is still that rip current the could absolutely pull you out to sea. We have a lot of rip currents that are open right now in every zone.”

“We’re probably just going to stay closer to the shore,” Tristian Perez, a beachgoer, told the station.

WESH reported that the red flags warning people the water is not safe will likely remain for the next few days.

Anyone caught in a rip current is advised to stay calm and swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current.
