Nearly 900,000 mail ballots requested for Pennsylvania’s primary

(WHTM) – Nearly 900,000 Pennsylvania voters requested a mail ballot for the April 23 primary.

According to the Department of State, following Monday’s application deadline, they received 895,166 mail ballot applications.

This Week in Pennsylvania

More than 650,000 of those applications (72.64%) were requested by Democrats for the closed primary. Republicans, who have made an effort from a national level to increase vote by mail participation in Pennsylvania, requested 236,133 ballots.

An additional 8,733 ballots were requested by non-Democrat or Republican voters. The Department of State says in a closed primary, voters not registered with one of the two major parties could still vote on local ballot issues.

More than 10% of registered Pennsylvania voters will have the opportunity to vote by mail in April. According to the Pennsylvania Department of State, there are 8,711,605 registered voters in the state: 3,892,619 registered Democrats, 3,495,378 Republicans, 981,763 voters with no affiliation, and 342,574 registered to a third party.

Pennsylvania voters can vote for several statewide offices on April 23, including State Attorney GeneralAuditor General, and Treasurer.

The Republican and Democratic primaries for U.S. Senate are uncontested with Bob Casey and Dave McCormick expected to face off in the November general election.

There are also several contested U.S. House seats on the ballot across Pennsylvania, including a Democratic primary in the 10th District, which includes Harrisburg.

Other contested primaries include the 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 14th Congressional Districts.

As of 8 a.m. on April 17, about 40% of the ballots issued have been returned. Voters have until 8 p.m. on April 23 to have their ballot returned to their county’s board of elections.
