Apple (AAPL) released iOS version 6.1 to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users on Monday. The software update brought LTE capabilities to 36 additional iPhone carriers and 23 new iPad carriers around the world. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, revealed within the company’s press release that nearly 300 million iPhones, iPads and iPod touch devices are running iOS 6 in just five months since its release. The executive speculates that the update “may be the most popular new version of an OS in history.” During the company’s earnings report last week, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that more than 500 million iOS devices have been sold worldwide, which could mean a whopping 60% of all iOS devices are now on the latest operating system.
