Some NE Ohioans confused by new street sign with flashing lights: Police

FAIRVIEW PARK, Ohio (WJW) – A new sign with flashing lights near a pedestrian pathway in Fairview Park is causing some confusion. To the point, local police said they are now increasing signage and stepping up enforcement efforts in the area.

According to the Fairview Park police chief, their department has received several complaints that cars are not stopping for the flashing lights at a crosswalk at Easton Road. And, there have been several reports of “near misses.”

Chief Paul Shepard explains the yellow signals are warning lights — not traffic control signals. This means the lights are intended to warn drivers of pedestrians either preparing to cross or crossing the street. Drivers are not required to stop for the signals but must yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk.

“Pedestrians must wait for breaks in traffic to begin crossing,” said Shepard.

Officials note that thousands of vehicles travel that area, and it serves as a “cut-through” for those commuting between Cleveland and the southwestern suburbs.

“A large portion of the drivers are not residents of Fairview Park but are merely driving through,” said Shepard.

Officials are asking both drivers and pedestrians to take note of the new signal and the “proper etiquette” required.
