NCSDAR enjoy second annual DAR Day at Crossnore

May 9—WINSTON-SALEM — North Carolina Society Daughters of the American Revolution's (NCSDAR) united Daughters from across the state to merge on the campus of Crossnore Communities for Children and learned more about the work the organization is doing for children in the community and how NCSDAR and its chapters can help.

While there, Daughters completed a service project together — packing "feeling boxes". It was also a day to celebrate a three-year fundraising effort to support the founding of a charter school on the Winston-Salem Crossnore campus. DAR has a long history with Crossnore Communities for Children, supporting them in various ways since the 1920s at their original campus in Avery County.

"My goal with DAR Day at Crossnore was to help our N.C. Daughters learn more about the Winston-Salem campus and how they serve children and families in this community. By doing so, they learn more about the need for the charter school." Choi continued, "Many of our Daughters had never visited this campus until we held a DAR Day at Crossnore. This is the second year and I've been overwhelmed by the response and the donations not just for the charter school, but to the school to support the various needs and programs offered."

NCSDAR donated $120,000 to Crossnore Communities for Children to aid in the founding of a Charter School.

Julie Stangler, state regent's project chairman, expressed her excitement about helping to present the donation to Crossnore CEO Brett Loftis.

"We raised three-times our original goal! It was amazing to see how our members rallied to support this project. I'm glad to have been a part of it all," Stangler.

During DAR Day at Crossnore 2024 Daughters packed 85 "feelings boxes" to help support children cared for and counseled by Crossnore Communities for Children.

"I've always enjoyed working with Crossnore and I'm thrilled with the participation of NC Daughters at DAR Day at Crossnore. It was exciting to see Daughters from across the state, representing 56 chapters and all eight districts working elbow to elbow on a service project for Crossnore Communities for Children," commented Robynn Rutledge, Vice Chairman, State Regent's Project Crossnore Liaison.

Daughters arrived on campus with bags and boxes of items to pack in a feelings box like a care package. The boxes were all labeled with a sticker that states "Open me when you are feeling sad." Or "Open me when you are feeling accomplished." Other feelings were happy, lonely, sick, creative, etc. The boxes are accessible by Crossnore staff and are used to provide intentional love and support for children facing different daily challenges or celebrations.

Some Daughters or chapters who could not attend sent donations from the Crossnore for Communities Wish List or items to support the "feelings boxes". The wish list is available at Amazon Gift List. Additionally, Crossnore is always in need of bed-in-a-bag, shoe store gift cards, and going into the summer would like beach towels, out door games, and games for older children.
