NC Senate tentatively approves Gov. Pat McCrory's transportation funding overhaul
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A new transportation funding model intended to direct more money to higher-impact projects in North Carolina has been tentatively approved by the state Senate.
The Senate gave initial approval Thursday to a transportation overhaul backed by Gov. Pat McCrory. The model would direct more money to statewide and regional projects that do more to address congestion and link cities to areas of job growth.
Currently, funding is divided evenly among the state's 14 Department of Transportation divisions.
The plan would require spending less on secondary roads. DOT would have to develop formulas for ranking future projects and return them to the General Assembly for approval.
Lawmakers from both parties are concerned the overhaul will short-change rural areas.
The bill requires another vote before returning to the House.
