NC DMV launches kiosks to shorten in-person wait times

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – The North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles is launching new kiosks that will let you renew licenses, state IDs and other DMV tasks while you’re running errands.

The department held its official launch Wednesday at the Harris Teeter store in Raleigh’s Brier Creek neighborhood, with plans to have a total of 20 kiosks statewide by the end of the year.

Soon, people will also be able to renew their tags and property taxes at a kiosk and you can do it anytime while the store is open.

“That’ll be a great thing for shortening lines and shortening wait times at the DMV,” said DMV commissioner Wayne Goodwin.

CBS 17 heard from store customers who are glad to have another option to immediately get services without going to a DMV office.

“It is something I would use. From the past experience of waiting all day at a DMV for hours at a time, long lines,” said store customer Calisa Lynk.

Kiosks are also running at the Harris Teeter on Raeford Road in Fayetteville and at one of its Charlotte stores.

DMV officials say you can only renew a driver license or ID at a kiosk if your last renewal was done in-person.
