NC awarded exchange money, even with GOP doubt
Federal government awards $74M to North Carolina for health insurance exchange development
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- North Carolina has been awarded a $74 million grant to keep developing a one-stop shop for affordable health insurance, even as Republican leaders are unsure they want the state to operate one.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded an additional $1.5 billion to North Carolina and 10 other states so they can build new insurance exchanges under the Affordable Care Act. North Carolina was previously awarded $14 million.
Exchanges are supposed to start next year. Democratic Gov. Beverly Perdue said in November the state and federal governments would run North Carolina's exchange jointly.
New GOP Gov. Pat McCrory is deciding whether the federal government should run the exchange. Senate leader Phil Berger says there's little support among senators for state-run or hybrid exchanges.
