NBC Midseason Schedule: ‘Trial & Error’ & ‘Great News’ Succeed ‘This Is Us’, ‘Shades Of Blue’ Moves, DC’s ‘Powerless’ Slotted
NBC is giving two midseason comedies, Trial & Error and Great News, The Voice lead by scheduling them back-to-back in an hourlong block. Meanwhile, the third new NBC midseason comedy series, the DC Comics-themed Powerless, will air behind Superstore on Thursdays. NBC’s midseason Thursday lineup also will include The Blacklist spinoff Redemption subbing for the mothership series in the 10 PM hour.
Meanwhile, cop drama Shades of Blue starring Jennifer Lopez, which aired in the Thursday 10 PM slot last spring, is moving to the post-football NBC Sunday lineup, which also will include the return of Little Big Shots and the latest offshoot of Dick Wolf’s Chicago franchise, legal drama Chicago Justice.
Trial & Error, starring John Lithgow, will debut following a 90-minute telecast of The Voice on Tuesday, March 7 before settling into its regular 9 PM time period the following week with back-to-back episodes. Trial & Error will succeed in the hour hit new drama This Is Us, which is producing 18 episodes and will have wrapped its freshman run by then. At the conclusion of Trial & Error, Great News — from executive producers Tracey Wigfield, Tina Fey and Robert Carlock — will debut in its own hourlong block with back-to-back episodes beginning Tuesday, April 25 at 9 PM.
NBC has used the same back-to-back launch strategy for other comedies, including The Carmichael Show, whose third season is yet to be scheduled by the network.
Powerless, based on characters from DC Comics, will premiere Thursday, Feb. 2 at 8:30 PM. It succeeds freshman comedy The Good Place, whose seasons consist of 13 episodes. Powerless will follow Superstore for an hourlong block of workplace comedies.
NBC’s new Sunday lineup will debut March 5 with the return of last midseason’s breakout Little Big Shots, new procedural Chicago Justice, and the second season of Shades of Blue.
Also, NBC has set Thursday, Feb. 23 as the premiere for The Blacklist: Redemption, which will air in The Blacklist’s 10 PM time slot for eight weeks. Following that, the original series starring James Spader will return Thursday, April 20.
As previously announced, the spring cycle of The Voice will premiere with a two-hour telecast on Monday, Feb. 27. NBC also already slated its new Wizard of Oz drama series Emerald City, which will debut at 9 PM Friday, January 6, following Grimm in its sixth and final season at 8 PM.
