Navy secretary to brief Congress on bribery probe
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A U.S. congressman says he wants copies of contracts between the Navy and a defense contractor at the heart of a widening multimillion-dollar bribery scheme that has implicated six naval officers so far.
Darrell Issa's office said Friday that Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is expected next week to brief the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which the Republican representative chairs.
Mabus says he is happy to discuss the matter, along with how the service is strengthening its oversight processes.
Federal prosecutors say two Navy ship commanders and a senior Naval Criminal Investigative Service's agent accepted pricey vacations and prostitute services in exchange for providing information to Leonard Glenn Francis, the chief operating officer of Glenn Defense Marine Asia Inc., who is awaiting trial on bribery charges.
