Nat'l Park Services closes some Ind. Dunes access

PORTER, Ind. (AP) — The National Park Service is closing some access points to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in anticipation of high Lake Michigan waves and possible flooding caused by superstorm Sandy.

The Post-Tribune of Merrillville reports (http://bit.ly/StqmH4) the park service has closed the Porter Beach parking lots and the Mount Baldy and Central Avenue access points in Michigan City. The Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk were to remain open, but the beach, breakwater and riverwalk will stay closed.

A Gary city spokeswoman says residents should exercise caution and stay away from beaches.

Portage Mayor James Snyder said city staff were preparing to respond to lake emergencies.
