National Signing Day still means something to many despite early signing period

MEMPHIS – It doesn’t have the fanfare of days gone by as Wednesday’s National Signing Day has lost a lot of its luster thanks to December’s early signing period.

But don’t tell the many area athletes that committed throughout the day that ‘this day’, isn’t important.

Like the 12 Germantown Red Devils who announced their college decisions which included quarterback Cordero Walker.  Walker deciding to stay close to home and play for Rhodes College.

With the transfer portal putting college rosters in flux, on a daily basis, many high school players have been forced to take a back seat in recruiting. Which only speaks volumes to what Gene Robinson and other talented programs around the city have been able to do. Getting kids in school.

“Obviously these kids started with adversity coming in during the COVID season, so they couldn’t play at all. Then they go through adversity dealing with the transfer portal, dealing with kids in college having an extra year. So those roster spots are minimized,” Robinson said. “For those guys to sign today, it’s a testament, using football in a big blessing that it could be to our lives.”
