Nashville police: Man dead after Clarksville Pike shooting, suspect in custody

A man is dead after a shooting off Clarksville Pike late Thursday night, Nashville police said.

The shooting was reported just after 10 p.m. in the 3900 block of Clarksville Pike in the Northwest Nashville area, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. A suspect is in custody.

Thomas Maxwell, 24, is charged with criminal homicide, according to police.

Officers responded to a robbery alarm at the Citgo convenience store and found Maxwell armed with two guns exiting the store.

DeJaun Gadsden, 20, was shot multiple times.

Police said Maxwell claimed Gadsden had robbed and assaulted last February and that he fired on Gadsden in self-defense.

Surveillance video reviewed by police contradicted Maxwell's account, as video showed Maxwell entering the business and as Gadsen approaches the front counter, Maxwell, with a firearm in hand, began to shoot at Gadsden.

As Gadsden fell to the floor, police say Maxwell leaned over him and continued shooting.
