Nanette Lepore beams a cosmic vibe on runway

NEW YORK (AP) — Stars aligned at Nanette Lepore's New York Fashion Week show Wednesday as she presented a fall collection that had a cosmic theme.

She said she found herself intrigued by the surfaces and textures beamed back from Mars by NASA's Exploration rover over the past few months. She was drawn to prints that looked like manipulated images of Earth's land and water from far away.

But Lepore worried it would all come off as too close to camouflage.

"I always panic about things that can go wrong, but then I try to think about what's right about the collection," the designer said.

What does she think she got right this time? "I love the coats. Take the black coat and a hologram handbag, and you're good to go," she said.

The starburst-embellished T-shirt with brushed deep-olive pants, and a violet-colored asymmetric peacoat with an iridescent striped sweater, along with a short and flirty skirt, deserved some kudos, too.

Lepore was right about the camo, but it still looked cool as a skinny-pant and shirt under a half-leather, half-wool car coat.
