Names released of 3 children and adult killed in Grundy County van rollover

Three children and one adult who were killed in a van rollover that injured nine other passengers in Grundy County about 6:50 a.m. Friday have been identified.

Marlin Borntreger, 1; Rebecca Borntreger, 2; Emma Borntreger, 4; and Ervin J. Borntreger, 22, died of their injuries sustained in the crash, according to the accident report.

Iowa State Patrol spokesperson Alex Dinkla said the driver lost control on a snow- and ice-covered stretch of westbound U.S. 20 near the Wellsburg exit. The van entered the median and rolled, ejecting four passengers.

"None of the occupants were using seatbelts or child-restraint devices," Dinkla wrote to the Register.

Dinkla said the nine injured people were taken to hospitals in Grundy County and Waterloo. Their conditions were not immediately available.

The investigation into the crash is continuing.
