Nails inc Enters the World of Lip Color With Lottie Tomlinson

The British nail brand known for innovation on the nail front — yes, the same one that brought spray bottles and kale to our nail polish, has now moved into lip color. Teaming up with makeup artist Lottie Tomlinson (whom you may recognize as Louis Tomlinson‘s little sister), Nails inc is launching its Matchbox collection today, to make matching lips and fingertips even easier.

The brand’s first-ever duo nail and lip paints feature four Lottie Lip Paints and Gel Effect, in shades that range from a tomato red to a bright pink. While the nail polishes are a classic bestseller for the brand, Tomlinson chose new shades and names that her friends use on a regular basis. And they just may give Kylie Lip Kits a run for their money. The lip paints are densely pigmented, yet lightweight, in dry to matte finishes that contain skin-conditioning emollients so your lips won’t dry out.

But why lips now? Global senior communications manager Becky Knowles said that while Nails inc is obviously an authority in color (the brand has been around for 19 years), it’s interested in taking a step in a new direction. “To do that with lips, we wanted to bring in a bit of credentials with that, and that’s why we brought in Lottie,” she says. Her skills as a makeup artist and knowledge of the younger demographic were a huge plus, she says.

We spoke to Tomlinson — who, of course, did all of her own makeup for the campaign imagery — about her thoughts on the collection, her bold lip tips, and more.

Yahoo Beauty: First of all, what is your personal favorite shade from the collection?

Tomlinson: One of my favorites is definitely Rascal/Hell, which is like the red, because it goes with a lot, and it’s like this orangey red, and is just really bright — I love that one.

When you’re working with matching lips and fingertips, what advice do you have for eyeshadow colors?

I think going with the same kind of color family always works, but I always say just doing whatever you want always suits you. Like with the Out Out/Buzzin, I did a really nice bright pink, but you could literally do anything with it — whatever you like will work.

What’s your best trick for actually making a bold color last all day long?

Lip prep is always an important part. So, use lip scrub, then lip balm, make sure all the lip balm is removed first, use a little translucent powder on the lips, then the lip paint, and then that should last all day.

But during the colder months, lips can get really flaky. How do you deal?

Just use a good lip balm. I always recommend a good natural lip balm such as Papaw, because it comes in quite a big tube, and your lips become quite addicted to balms that have certain chemicals in them, whereas Papaw is made from fruit enzymes.

You’re constantly changing your hair — what are your best tricks for keeping it healthy?

Every time you wash it, shampoo it, and then use a mask or conditioner to keep it hydrated. I use the Reincarnation Mask by Bleach London. Also, try to use minimal heat when styling. I also use extensions for fullness — Easilocks hair is no heat, no glue, and you can remove them without damaging your hair.

Do you find you change your makeup or nails depending on what you’re doing with your hair color?

Oh, definitely. Say like when I had green hair, I had to be quite careful with what I used on my face, because some things would clash. So I definitely think your hair color affects what you do with the rest of your image.

And lastly, what makeup looks are you most into playing around with right now?

I’d like to try more eyeliners, because I’m always a no-liner kind of person — I’d like to try colored liners, like black, brown, blue — that’s what I’ll be trying soon.

So clearly, we’ll be seeing colored liners from Nails inc next, right?

Hey, now you never know!
