N.Y. appeals court denies Trump request to pause $10K daily fines

A New York appeals court denied Tuesday former President Donald Trump’s request to block $10,000 daily fines for failing to comply with State Attorney General Letitia James’ civil fraud probe into his business practices.

The ruling by the Appellate Division, First Department in Manhattan comes 10 days after Justice Arthur Engoron slapped Trump with a civil contempt order for not fully responding to James’ demands for evidence. Trump had asked for the fines to be put on pause while he pursued an appeal.

By Wednesday morning, Trump will be on the hook for $100,000. A representative for James’ office confirmed Trump is also getting fined on weekends.

At a videoconference on Friday, Engoron expressed skepticism about Trump’s claim he had no more documents to hand over to the AG. The judge cited Trump’s reputation for communicating through Post-it notes.

“I’m surprised that he doesn’t seem to have any documents,” Engoron said at the hearing. “He’s famous, I believe, for Post-its. When he wants something done, he puts a Post-it on something. I don’t think we’ve received any Post-its.”

James’ nearly three-year-long probe could soon result in a lawsuit against the former president and the Trump Organization. The AG is examining whether Trump, his adult children, and other company executives misstated the value of Trump Org properties by hundreds of millions of dollars to obtain tax breaks and other benefits.

Alina Habba, who represents Trump in the case, did not respond to a request for comment.
