‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Heads To Netflix With Patton Oswalt – Comic-Con
Netflix’s reboot of the longtime cult favorite Mystery Science Theater 3000 will land “in the not-too-distant future,” with Patton Oswalt appearing in a new role, the streaming service says. News of the return — announced Saturday at Comic-Con — follows a $5.7 million Kickstarter campaign spearheaded by MST3000 creator Joel Hodgson and Shout! Factory to produce 14 new episodes.
Hodgson will return to the series behind the scenes, with new host Jonah Ray picking up where the program’s former, second host – Michael J. Nelson — left off. Joining Ray onscreen will be Oswalt, Felicia Day as a character named Kinga Forrester, and Mary Jo Pehl (“Pearl Forrester”), Bill Corbett (“Crow T. Robot”) and Kevin Murphy (“Tom Servo”) reprising their roles from the original series.
Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn will voice the show’s robots.
Elliott Kalan, former head writer of The Daily Show, will be the show’s head writer, with Dan Harmon and Joel McHale (Community) attached for writing duties.
The new season will be exec produced by Hodgson, Richard Foos, Bob Emmer, Garson Foos, Jonathan Stern, Harold Buchholz and Elliott Kalan, along with Satellite of Love, LLC, Alternaversal Productions and Abominable Pictures. The program, in which live characters — and puppets — sit in an audience and mock atrociously bad movies — will be available on Netflix in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Ireland.
