A mysterious ‘interdimensional door’ appeared in Salt Lake City — here’s what it means

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Visitors to the Gallivan Center in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City may have noticed something strange: A standalone, wood-colored door with the words “INTERDIMENSIONAL DOOR #3RVIVEU” and a QR code to scan.

However, just as quickly as it appeared, the door was gone. Those who were able to scan the QR code before the door vanished were taken to a surreal-looking website, welcoming them to the “Key Unconscious Research Institute (KURI).”

The website explains that KURI aims to delve into “the uncharted territories of dreams” and is dedicated to unraveling their mysteries as doorways to alternate dimensions. Visitors are encouraged to share their most recent dreams with the KURI team through the website or at Project KURI’s Instagram page.

Rose, a spokesperson for KURI who did not provide their last name, told ABC4 the door and its seemingly random string of numbers and letters are part of a larger puzzle. In fact, doors such as the one found in Salt Lake City have also appeared in multiple other cities across the United States and Canada.

“While I can’t reveal the secrets behind these numbers and letters just yet, I can share that they are the first step in a deeply immersive journey that blurs the lines between our waking lives and the unexplored worlds that exist within our subconscious,” Rose explained.

Rose said the door is part of a story-telling technique known as an “Alternate Reality Game” — or ARG.

A popular example of an ARG is the immersive art exhibits at Meow Wolf, which has locations in New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada. At Meow Wolf, visitors explore different sites such as a house, a shopping market or an interdimensional travel hub learning more about the “in-game” universe through videos and clues.

Much like Meow Wolf, KURI invites people’s curiosity to follow along with the story as it unfolds over the next few weeks and months, only out in the real world on a multi-national scale.

KURI told ABC4 the project was inspired by dreams, human curiosity and a goal to bring people together.

“We hold onto the belief that impossible things can happen when we collectively set our minds to it,” said Rose. “Our inspiration comes from the understanding that immersive storytelling is a way not only to pique the curiosity of those involved but to bring people together through unraveling the mysteries held in the story itself.”

Rose said there is much more to come and believes the story will not only captivate those following along but also inspire new ways of thinking about oneself and the possibilities of something beyond understanding.
