Myrtle Beach to host second annual esports competition this weekend

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — A dozen college esports teams will be on the Grand Strand this weekend vying for video game supremacy during the second annual Boost at the Beach tournament.

Competitors will play action sports game “Rocket League” beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday at The Hangout, with group play set to start at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

A high school-level “Super Smash Bros.” tournament is also planned for 10 a.m. on Sunday, with on-site registration prior to play beginning.

“There was an overwhelmingly positive response from last year’s award-winning event, and we’re looking to make it even bigger and better for this year,” Joey Gawrysiak, executive director of esports at Syracuse University, said in a news release.

Entrants this year are:

  • Clemson University

  • The University of South Carolina

  • Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

  • George Mason University

  • Georgia State University

  • Maryville University

  • Michigan State University

  • Northeastern

  • Ole Miss

  • Syracuse

  • UNC Charlotte

  • West Virginia

The tournament is fully managed by students from Shenandoah University and Syracuse, with support from Coastal Carolina University’s esports club.

Spectators can watch the competition in person or live on Twitch and YouTube.
