Today is National Mustang Day, according to Ford. In addition to announcing sales numbers to celebrate, the company has also revealed it will be bringing the Mustang to the NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series for the 2019 season.

The Mustang will replace the Fusion, which currently runs in the series under Front Row Motorsports, Go Fas Racing, Wood Brothers Racing, Stewart-Haas Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, and Team Penske. According to Ford, the Mustang is still going through testing and will be submitted for approval to NASCAR sometime this summer. Once it's approved, we'll get to see the car for real.

The Mustang has been used in NASCAR's minor-league Xfinity Series since 2011. This will be the first time the Mustang will appear in NASCAR's top-tier league. Considering the Mustang is an actual sports car (unlike the aging Fusion sedan), this move makes sense-unless people actually buy Fusions after they see them being raced in NASCAR, which I doubt is the case.

The debut of the Mustang in NASCAR will also coincide with the release of the upcoming Mustang GT500, which we think means there's a solid chance Ford will use that version for the Monster Energy car whole leaving the Xfinity car as the Mustang GT. It'll also see the Mustang compete against the Camaro in NASCAR's top league. Those two will have to take on their biggest rival on the road, the... Toyota Camry?

The NASCAR Mustang will make its race debut at the Daytona 500 on February 17th, 2019.
