New Orleans jazz musician Jon Batiste on Hurricane Katrina anniversary

By Kaye Foley

Growing up in Kenner, La., a suburb of New Orleans, Jon Batiste, the new bandleader for The Late Show, has deep roots in the Crescent City. He and his family left New Orleans ahead of Hurricane Katrina and lived in Texas for a couple months.

Batiste talked to Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric about his experiences.

“It’s like one of those things you see in a movie, and you don’t think could really happen in your town, in your neighborhood. And you see it and it’s, like, ‘Wow.’”

When asked if he believes the city has come back, Batiste said, “I feel like it’s evolved. I don’t think that, after something that changes the landscape of the city like that, it can come back the way it was before. But it’s evolved to be something else that I feel has that vibrance and energy that I would still recommend people go down and check out and be a part of and learn from and take with them.”

Batiste also discussed his passion for jazz, his signature “love riots” and his new gig on CBS.
