Murrysville Council approves WetGo car wash on Route 22

Apr. 6—Murrysville officials approved construction of a WetGo car wash, which will replace the former Standard Bank on Route 22.

Giant Eagle officials have expanded their presence in the municipality's business corridor in recent years, adding a GetGo gas station and upgrading the grocery store to a Market District.

In addition to Route 22 access, customers at the GetGo next door would be able to use an interconnection to drive to the car wash. Existing curb cuts leading to Old William Highway will be eliminated.

The tunnel-style conveyor car wash would have two queue lanes, and covered spaces for free car vacuuming.

Council voted unanimously to approve both the site plan and conditional use permit. Councilwoman Jamie Lee Korns was not present.

In other business:

—Council held a public hearing for a request to rezone 19.3 acres near the intersection of Franklintowne Court and Logan Ferry Road for a five-lot, single-family home development.

The parcel is zoned residential-1 (R-1), and is situated adjacent to both R-2 and R-3 residential properties.

Developer Sushil Shinde said "up-zoning" will allow him to leave hilly terrain and a small stream that takes up the majority of property.

"Out of 19 acres, we can barely use eight," Shinde said. "We could build more than five homes with the existing R-1 zoning, but we don't want to do that. We don't want to disturb the hilly land, since it would not be beneficial for the neighborhood."

Anthony Tantalo lives across Logan Ferry Road from the proposed development.

"Right outside our front porch, traffic is backed up Monday through Friday starting at 4 p.m.," Tantalo said. "When we have the farmer's market in the summer on Thursday evenings, it takes me 15 minutes to go a third-of-a-mile to Route 22."

Tantalo said he didn't have anything against a five-home development plan, "but I just hope it can be done properly so we don't have to sit in traffic all day."

Council took no action following the public hearing.

—Mayor Regis Synan advised residents to be aware of the annual Blessing of the Bikes, taking place around 12:30 p.m. April 16 at Murrysville Alliance Church, 4130 Old William Penn Highway.

"There are sometimes thousands of people in attendance, and Old William Penn usually gets shut down when they head out onto the road," Synan said.
