Murfreesboro mother indicted on murder, abuse charges for death of infant son

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WKRN) — A Murfreesboro woman has been indicted by a Rutherford County Grand Jury for her connection to the death of her infant son, officials said.

According to the Murfreesboro Police Department, 25-year-old Jalani Patton’s four-week-old son died in April 2023.

An investigation led by MPD’s Criminal Investigations Unit reportedly began on April 22, 2023 after officers were sent to Ashwood Cove Apartments along N. Tennessee Boulevard to respond to an “unresponsive infant.”

Patton allegedly told officers that her baby fell off the bed and hit his head. The four-week-old later died at a local hospital, officials said.

After an autopsy was performed by the medical examiner, officials determined the infant died from blunt force head trauma, and ruled the death as a homicide.

Authorities reported Patton was arrested on Wednesday, May 16 in connection to the infant’s death. She faces felony first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges.

Patton is being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on $250,000 bond.

She is expected to appear in Rutherford County Circuit Court on June 25, officials said.
