Murdered Jo Cox: Charity Page Flooded With Donations In Memory of MP

Thousands of pounds of donations are flooding in to a charity page set up in memory of murdered MP Jo Cox.

Nearly £300,000 has already been donated by people from across the world to a GoFundMe page set up by friends and family of the late Labour politician to raise money for three charities “closest to her heart”.

More than £290,000 had been raised by Saturday morning - less than 24 hours after the page was set up.

The three charities chosen by Mrs Cox’s family represent her campaigns to help civilians caught up in the Syrian war, to fight racism and extremism in Britain, and to help residents in her Batley and Spen constituency in West Yorkshire.

The charities are: The White Helmets, volunteer search and rescue workers in Syria; HOPE not hate, which aims to fight hate and extremism in communities across Britain; and The Royal Voluntary Service, which supports volunteers helping to combat loneliness in Mrs Cox’s constituency.

In a Twitter message to those wanting to mark his wife’s death with a donation, Mrs Cox’s husband Brendan said: “Protecting people in Syria, tackling loneliness & fighting extremism; some of the causes Jo fought 4. U can help here http://gofund.me/jocox.”

The fundraising page includes Mr Cox’s words following his wife’s death, in which he said she would want people to “unite to fight against the hatred that killed her”, adding: “Let’s come together and give what we can to help create that better world.”

An online book of condolence has been set up on the Labour Party website, with people invited to “leave messages of condolence, support, and solidarity for Jo’s family, friends and colleagues”.

A page on the campaigning website Avaaz is inviting people to pledge to honour Mrs Cox’s memory “by picking up the banner of love, and carrying it to our homes, our communities, our countries and our world”.
