Murder suspect deemed ‘fit to stand trial’ in connection to Pour Bros. shooting in Champaign
URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The man police say is responsible for shooting and killing Brandon Hardway, general manager at Pour Brothers in Champaign, was back in court Tuesday afternoon.
Fidele Tshimanga was charged with first-degree murder in February in connection to the shooting outside Pour Brothers on Feb 8. Tshimanga is also facing charges in two other cases regarding other crimes, including the theft of the murder weapon and its use in an armed robbery two days before Hardway’s murder. Prosecutors say Tshimanga confessed to both crimes during police interviews.
At Tshimanga’s arraignment in connection with the theft and robbery charges on Feb 17, Tshimanga’s lawyer requested a psychiatric evaluation due to mental health concerns. This evaluation was what was discussed during the fitness hearing today.
Champaign County Judge Randall Rosenbaum reviewed the doctor’s evaluation. The report indicated that Tshimanga does suffer from a mental illness, but finds that he is fit to stand trial.

Tshimanga’s defense attorney and Scott Larson, Champaign County assistant state’s attorney, both said a second opinion from another doctor is important. The judge agreed and entered an order for a second evaluation.
Larson said this is a serious case, and given the circumstances, they want to see if another doctor has the same opinion.
If the doctor agrees, they’ll talk to the defense about how to proceed. If the opinion differs, then there may be another pre-trial.
His next court date is June 26 for further proceedings.
