Muncie postal worker accused of stealing mail

MUNCIE, Ind. — A Muncie postal worker has been accused of stealing mail, targeting greeting cards in her search for cash.

Rachael Brim, 36, was charged last week in Delaware Circuit Court 1 with official misconduct, a Level 6 felony carrying up to 30 months in prison, and theft, a misdemeanor.

According to a report by a special agent with the U.S. Postal Service, an investigation into allegations Brim might be stealing mail was launched last September.

At that time, authorities said about 120 pieces of mail had been received at the local USPS processing and distribution center "unsealed, without contents and/or (with) the contents tampered with."

Brim at that point "had conducted multiple collection runs for the Muncie main post office over the last few weeks."

An affidavit said at least eight "rifled" greeting cards could be linked to a collection route assigned to Brim on Sept. 9.

Interviewed by postal officials on Sept. 23, Brim reportedly admitted she had been "rifling" mail, specifically greeting cards, looking for cash.

The Muncie woman said she "needed money for food and rent," the document reported.

She estimated she had stolen about $100 in total. and recalled using a $10 gift card from Walmart found with one greeting card in August.

Investigators later found USPS collection tubs, along with "rifled mail, specifically greeting cards," in Brim's private vehicle.

Brim, who had worked for the postal service for about a year, resigned from her position as a "city carrier assistant" on Sept. 28.

The Muncie woman will receive a summons to appear at an initial hearing in Circuit Court 1 on March 16.
