Vasquez leads Schmidt in Multnomah County DA race

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One of the few primary races left undecided Tuesday night tightened a little bit Wednesday morning but challenger Nathan Vasquez still leads in the Multnomah County District Attorney race.

As of 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, Vasquez is leading incumbent Mike Schmidt by 13,978 votes, 65,349 to 51,371, with 63% of precincts reporting. The last count Tuesday night at 10 p.m. showed Vasquez with a 14,121 vote lead.

Vasquez’s spoke to supporters and the media after those late Tuesday night results were released.

Schmidt had issued a statement early Tuesday evening, shortly after the first vote totals were released, showing Vasquez with a large lead.

“This has been a hard-fought campaign, and while it is still too early to definitively call this race, right now we are down,” Schmidt said. “I look forward to seeing more results come in. Regardless of the outcome, I want to thank this community for the incredible support they have shown this campaign.”

A winner will be announced following the May election if a candidate receives more than 50% of the vote. If neither candidate reaches the 50% threshold, a runoff election will be held in November. However, that result now seems unlikely.
