Multnomah County approves destruction of nearly 100 guns

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approved the destruction of more than 100 guns or gun-related accessories Thursday.

The weapons were seized by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office during criminal cases or were turned over to the sheriff’s office by gun owners. The guns scheduled for destruction include various handguns, shotguns and rifles.

While in office in 2022, now-retired Multnomah County Sheriff Michael Reese issued a public service announcement saying that the MCSO destroys unwanted guns to reduce gun violence and create safer communities.

“Removing firearms from our communities reduces the risk of gun accidents, injuries, suicides and homicides,” Reese said.

The county destroyed the guns by delivering them to a local waste facility, where they melted in an industrial furnace. See the full list of guns set for destruction in the document included in this story.
