More than $12 million in federal funding is being allocated to five universities in the California State University system.

According to a CSU release, the funding is part of a “minibus” package for the 2024 fiscal year that was signed by President Joe Biden on March 8.

The funded projects and their sponsors include:

  • Cal State Fullerton – $5 million for the Titan Gateway Bridge, sponsored by Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-45)

  • Cal State Long Beach – $3.4 million for improvements to the university’s Child Development Center, sponsored by Rep. Robert Garcia (CA-42)

  • Cal State Northridge – $963,000 for the California Regenerative Aquaculture Hub, sponsored by Rep. Brad Sherman (CA-32); an additional $963,000 for CSUN’s Strength United Domestic Violence Community Policing and Advocacy Project, sponsored by Rep. Tony Cárdenas (CA-29)

  • Cal State San Bernardino – $963,000 for the university’s Tech and Workforce Hub Project, sponsored by Sen. Alex Padilla and Rep. Pete Aguilar (CA-33)

  • San Diego State University – $963,000 for the Transmission Electron Microscope, sponsored by Rep. Sara Jacobs (CA-51)

School system officials say that the new grants will not only benefit CSU students, but all Golden State residents.

“This visionary funding package is a wonderful example of how, with the support of our California congressional delegation, we can develop innovative and effective programs that benefit not only our students, but also our campus communities and our state,” CSU Chancellor Mildred García said in a statement. “We are grateful and deeply appreciative of the trust these members of Congress place in CSU as well as their partnership in helping advance our mission of elevating lives through the transformative powers of higher education.”

CSU’s federal policy priorities focus on improving college access and timely completion through student aid and enhancing the Pell Grant program; in 2021-22, CSU students and their families benefited from $1.8 billion in federal financial assistance, the school system said, including from Pell Grant awards, work study funds and student loans.
