Multi-million pound plan to revamp market approved

Multi-million pound plans to revamp Bilston market have been given the go ahead.

Plans for a new canopy to cover outdoor stalls, a retail unit and refurbishment to the indoor market and car parks were submitted in November.

New public toilets, a flexible space where events can be hosted and a reorganisation of both markets form part of the revamp.

Funding of £5.2m from the Towns Fund will go towards the cost of the project.

The outdoor market, made up of almost 120 stalls, will celebrate its 200th birthday this year.

The indoor market, with 88 stalls and 42 traders, was highly commended at the Great British Market Awards earlier this year.

Bilston was among four towns in the West Midlands awarded £20m in October after being identified as among the most overlooked in the country.
