Muller Quaker yogurt plant formally opening in NY

Muller Quaker Dairy Facility to have formal opening in NY; yogurt plant to employ up to 180

BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) -- The latest player in upstate New York's yogurt boom is set to officially open.

PepsiCo Chief Executive Indra Nooyi is scheduled to cut the ribbon on the new Muller Quaker Dairy Facility in Batavia on Monday, joined by Sen. Charles Schumer and others.

The facility is a joint venture between PepsiCo and the German Theo Muller dairy company.

The 350,000-square-foot plant in the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park will make a variety of yogurt products. Officials say it will have about 150 to 180 employees to begin with and will boost the local dairy farm economy.

The plant is next to a $20 million yogurt plant opened last October by Alpina Foods, based in Bogota, Colombia.
