How much snow is expected to fall during Thursday’s storm?

DENVER (KDVR) — From 60 degrees to heavy snow; that’s springtime in Colorado.

The Pinpoint Weather team has been tracking a storm that will make its way to the Denver metro beginning on Wednesday afternoon and lasting through Friday. The storm will bring heavy snow and big impacts.

A Pinpoint Weather Alert Day has been issued for Thursday.

Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Travis Michels said, “This could be one of the biggest systems Denver has seen in a few years.”

The team is still working to fine-tune the details of the storm, but the meteorologists have gotten a better look at how much snow is expected to fall over the next few days.

Timing

The storm system moved into Colorado on Saturday and brought some snow to the high country. A winter storm warning has been in effect since Tuesday.

The storm will then make its way east and bring rain to the Denver metro by the mid to late afternoon hours on Wednesday. Eventually, that rain will transition to snow by Wednesday evening.

Then, the big day arrives on Thursday. Snow is expected to fall throughout the day, bringing heavy and wet snow to much of the state.

Finally, snow will taper off by Friday morning when the sunshine returns.

Snow totals

The Pinpoint Weather team is looking at some impressive preliminary totals as of Wednesday. March is Denver’s snowiest month, and this storm system is expected to bring several inches of accumulation.

The storm is still two days away, so totals could fluctuate. These are the preliminary snow totals as of Wednesday at 6 a.m.

  • Denver metro: 8-16 inches

  • Downtown Denver: 12 inches

  • Palmer Divide: 14-24 inches or more

  • Foothills: 16-38 inches

  • Mountains: 6-12 inches

Areas like Castle Rock and Monument Hill are expected to see the biggest impact. Castle Rock could possibly get 23 inches of snow.

Georgetown could be one of the hardest hit areas with the chance of seeing 18-36 inches with some localized spots up to 4 feet.

Denver is slated to get anywhere from 8 to 16 inches, with up to 20 inches west of Interstate 25, while other cities could see a lot more.

Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez said, “The foothills are going to get absolutely slammed.” So, be prepared for some heavy accumulation.

Stay home if you can

The Pinpoint Weather team expects this snow to be heavy and wet, which could cause downed trees and power lines, poor visibility and slick roadways.

If you can stay home on Thursday, the Pinpoint Weather team recommends you do so, as there will be hazardous road conditions. The team also anticipates many schools will be closed for the day.

Perez believes school may also be canceled on Friday.

Travel will be dangerous, so if you must drive, make sure you have all the necessary gear and take it slow.

Once Friday arrives, so does the sunshine. All that accumulation will begin to melt leading to a mild weekend.
