How much snow is expected to fall in Colorado this weekend?

DENVER (KDVR) — After a high fire risk in Denver’s weather forecast Saturday, a cold front will bring snow to the Colorado mountains starting late Saturday afternoon.

Saturday will be a Pinpoint Weather Alert Day because of fire concerns and winter weather travel conditions in the mountains.

Here’s what to know before hitting the high country.

Snowy Colorado weekend: What to expect

According to Pinpoint Weather, Saturday will be warm and windy until snow starts to pick up in the evening.

“Getting into the mountains on Saturday early is fine, but come 4 or 5 p.m., snow is going to start to get underway and it’s going to turn heavy quickly,” Pinpoint Weather Chief Meteorologist Dave Fraser said.

Snow will be heavy in the mountains late on Saturday, with blowing snow and low visibility making travel difficult.

Travelers warned of ‘snow globe effect’ in Colorado’s mountains

Sunday is when the bulk of rain and snow showers come in.

How much snow will fall?

Snow totals in the mountains could exceed a foot in some areas by late Sunday, according to Pinpoint Weather, Colorado’s Most Accurate Forecast.

There could be some mixed rain and snow showers south of Denver starting early Sunday morning. Little to no snowfall will accumulate in the Denver area thanks to warm ground from highs in the 60s the last few days, as well as warming temperatures. Those clouds are expected to lift out around 3 p.m.

Why do Denver snow days keep falling on weekends?

If any snow accumulates along the Front Range, it looks to be south of the city and less than an inch, which should melt quickly.

Meanwhile, it will be snowing in the mountains for a total of about a foot of snow by Sunday night.

Monday, snow showers will wrap up in the mountains. Snowfall totals will reach 9-18 inches widespread, with isolated totals closer to 2 feet.
