MTV VMAs: The best looks of all time, from 1984 to 2017

Few things are guaranteed in the tumult of Hollywood, but one annual event never disappoints: The red carpet at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Instead of bringing out the glitz and glamour, stars use the VMAs as an opportunity to go wild, boldly making the craziest fashion statements of the year. From nearly-nude to covered in feathers, the VMA red carpet is even more unpredictable than the show itself.

Although the carpet is usually decked out with more fashion fails than wins, there are always a few celebrities who manage to push the boundary without looking ridiculous. Cindy Crawford reigns supreme, attending year after year in the late '80s and early '90s in sexy but edgy numbers. Honorable mentions go to Janet Jackson, Christina Aguilera (during some years -- definitely not all) and, more recently, Selena Gomez.

Although the night is about music videos, celebrity guests have historically flocked from all facets of Hollywood: Supermodels, socialites, actors and, as of late, social media influencers are just as present as music artists.

And once the show wraps, the fashion moments are still rolling! Celebrities make major outfit changes before hitting afterparties around the city. Last year's post-party fashion winner was Rihanna, who donned a figure-skimming, flapper-inspired green gown. Check out her look and others in the slideshow below.
