MTS, Padres unveil new trolley wrap to promote public transit on gamedays

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Ahead of the Padres home opener at Petco Park Thursday, the team has unveiled a new trolley wrap featuring key players in an effort to encourage fans to take the trolley.

“If there’s a way to come down without having to drive the trolley’s a great option,” said Michael Trimble, Gaslamp Quarter Association’s executive director.

The trolley drops passengers at the Gaslamp Quarter Arch, just steps away from Petco Park.

“It really is the easiest way and the safest way as well because then you don’t have to worry about drinking and driving,” said Trimble.

From any trolley stop in the city of San Diego, Padres fans can get a round trip ticket for just $5.

“Round trip for an adult is only $5, for seniors it’s only $2.50 and for young people 18 and under with a youth opportunity pass, it’s free. So that is really cost effective when you compare the cost of parking downtown,” said Stephen Whitburn, MTS chairman.

Padres home opener: Where to watch, what to do for game

Taking public transportation is a very cost-effective way to get to the game when compared to the price of parking downtown, where there are many lots to choose from but they’re more expensive and can fill up fast.

Popular parking options include parking across the bridge in the Bayfront Hilton parking structure for $42, the Padres Parkade on Tenth Avenue for $25 to $45 and the lot on 7th Avenue and Market Street.

If you’re trying to save money, Whitburn recommends parking in a free park and ride lot and using public transit to get to the game.

What’s the forecast for Padres opening weekend?

“We have park and ride lots throughout the MTS system where people can park their car for free get on a trolley, take the trolley in, not have to worry about parking at all,” Whitburn said.

The Padres say they will be ramping up trolley service during home games.
