Mt. Zion takes home fourth place at State

CHAMPAIGN (WCIA) — Mt. Zion boys basketball looked like they belonged in the first half of the Class 3A State Semifinal, heading into the locker room tied with Mount Carmel at 30. But in the second half, sophomore JC Anderson and the Braves couldn’t get to the net falling 65-49.

“I wanted to come out and punch them in the mouth,” Anderson said. “I got going, my shots were falling, and in the second half they obviously were a lot more aggressive with me.”

Anderson dropped 16 points in the first half to lead all scorers.. but one free throw was all he was able to find in the second. The Caravan doubled up the Braves in the third and kept it up in the final frame, stepping up the defense for a double-digit win.

“They turned their aggressiveness up,” MTZ head coach Dale Schuring said. “Kind of got us a little bit out of what we wanna do and we didn’t execute great and the biggest thing is we just didn’t make shots.”

Mt. Zion fell to Peoria Richwoods 62-50 in the Third Place Game on Friday night.
